I was a kid in the sixties, so I grew up with a sense that protests in the streets could change things: end wars, win justice for the disenfranchised. My older siblings were college activists, and they, and my gutsy, liberal mother, took me to demonstrations sometimes, where I shouted slogans and waved hand-lettered posters in the smog and sunlight of Southern California.
